Ski wax helps you to protect your skis as well as making them give a better performance. Skiing equipment is not cheap. On the contrary it can be very expensive so you really should take good care of this equipment. Systematic maintenance will save you a lot of money in the long run.

It’s not too difficult to do the work yourself and may actually be therapeutic and rewarding to do it. And of course you will save yourself the expense of paying the professional.

Ski Wax And Ski Maintenance

Grinding. When taking care of your skis the only real piece of machinery that is required is that of the stone grinder. This stone grinder is used on the base of the ski and should be done a couple of times every season at the least. Now these are expensive machines to buy and really you don’t want to purchase one of these. So the best thing to do when your skis need grinding is to drop them off to a professional. Most ski shops have one of these grinders. When in use the ski tends to become buffeted and the edges of the skis get burred. These symptoms have an adverse effect on the performance of the ski as well as subjecting the ski to excess moisture. This will shorten the life of your ski. So do have them ground at least twice every season.

Ski wax is also an essential part of ski maintenance. There are waxes out there on the market for all types of snow and temperature conditions. Ski wax you can apply yourself by rubbing or melting onto the ski. Rubbed wax on a ski is not as effective as melted wax because it has a higher chance of wearing off. So if you can do hot wax. All you need for this is a ski wax iron to apply the wax. Once you have applied the wax just use a rubbing pad to polish the base. This ski wax increases the performance of your skis as well as giving them a protective coating.

Ski sides have steel edges which facilitate turning and stopping. But with continual use over various terrains there is a very high possibility that they get nicked or gauged. You can also stone them as well as just banging them together. To see if your ski has any of these symptoms you can just run you finger along the edge of the ski to check for smoothness. If you do detect any nicks or gauges then you should sharpen them again. This is quite a skilful job as you need complete smoothness and you must also make sure that you do not remove too much of the metal. It is definitely a harder job to do than to apply ski wax, but with a little patience and due care attention it can be accomplished by yourself. To smooth the edge of the ski you require an edging stone and to use it properly you run it in a back and forth motion making sure that you keep the stone at the right angle to the ski.

And when the ski season is over for the year you should give you skis one final ski wax before storing them for the summer. This final application will protect them from any moisture and prevent any rusting along the edge of the ski. The added bonus to this as well is that whilst in storage the bases of the ski will also absorb the ski wax all through the summer which ultimately gives them a more impervious texture. And finally when in storage always loosen the release mechanisms on the bindings. This precaution will prevent the springs from losing their tension. But remember to set them back again before you hit the slopes. If you have any doubts about resetting them yourself then just go to a ski shop and have a technician do it for you. This way you are ensured of maximum safety. So do all of this maintenance and your skis will pay you back many times over. And never forget to ski wax.

By taking good care of your skis they will be more durable as well as giving you better conduct on the slopes you experience. You can of course have your skis

You will need tools to do the work and will probably have to buy them if none of your friends have them to loan you. However over the years buying the tools in the first instance will prove to be very cost effective.
